Trekking Surrounding the cerro Cortez (Cortez Hill)  - Ushuaia - Argentina

This trekking goes around the Cortez hill by its northern side through the Fuegian forest dominated by lenga (Nothofagus pumilio), the cherry (Nothofagus betuloides) and ñire (Nothofagus antarctica) relegated to the most adverse places. Under the forest we will be able see small ferns, liverworts and fungi.

The trail starts at 3.8 km taken from the traffic police detachment of Ushuaia by Route 3 north. There we will find the old bridge of Olivia River, where we leave our vehicle and prepare to start our trekking.

The tour begins in a well-marked path and soon we will find some gates which we must cross (cross over or cross side when they are closed) and follow an old road of loggers.

At about 600 meters on our right (north) we can see the valley dominated by peat bogs with Mount Olivia on the right and Cerro Portillo on the left.

At about 1.4 kilometers begins a climb that takes us to the highest point of our journey that we will find after walking 2.7 km where we will be about 300 meters high.

All that walking is done by dense forest, and we must cross fallen trees and we must be careful not to leave the path that in some sections it may be lost.

Then start to descend to the 5km where we can see the Chico River valley on our right, and where the forest is more open and if the weather allows it is a good place to take time out for lunch.

From there the trail is wide and well marked which lead us to the road to the Arakur hotel.

Total distance: 7 km

Logistics for this trail:

We must have at least 2 vehicles because the trekking does not end at the same place where we started.

First we must go with all vehicles on the road leading to the hotel Arakur approximately 2 km, on the first corner there is a place to leave the cars parked. Once this is done we return to backtrack to Route 3 and headed to the starting point of the trek. At the end our day we must do the opposite.

We hope you enjoy it.
