Trekking Cerro Bonete refuge - Ushuaia - Tierra del Fuego - Argentina

The path starts from Route 3 at  18 km left  from the city of Ushuaia. It is an area at the side of the road where there is space to leave vehicles.

From there, we began to walk on an old loggers path passing through the woods.

After about 800 meters we reached at Esmeralda river, at right, NE (upstream) will see a beaver dam of important dimensions. In winter it is possible to pass over the river because there is a snow bridge, but be careful if temperatures were not too low, it may cause instability in it.

We will found the solution 100 meters downstream, heading southwest, where there is a suspension bridge built with wood and branches of the place, which must cross one at a time because their resistance to weight is limited.

After returning to the path (going upstream 100 mts.) we get into the woods again at old loggers path where we will walk about 2,3 km with almost zero slope to reach to an old woodcutter shelter and the first peat bog crossing  which has a width of 200 meters. In winter the crossing is easier because everything is frozen and just have to be careful at crossings over streams and small lakes so that snow does not yield. In summer it is more complicated because we have to find a way to cross without falling into the mud.

Once we have made the crossing of the peat bog we'll get into the forest where we have to climb about 100 meters of altitude in a distance of 900 meters along a path of open forest where the landscape is already displayed in a very particular beauty.

Finished the forest path we have to cross again the peat bog about 200 meters wide where we should take the same precautions as in the previous intersection and head into the final stretch of forest which is more stocky, and after about 300 mts we find the refuge.

The refuge has a salamander inside and you can spend the night there. It is important, once you have used leave it clean and tidy, taking care to leave the doors and windows tightly closed and to extinguish the salamander fire.

The place has incredible views of Cerro Bonete and Beban Pass which communicates with the Fagnano Lake.

Total distance of the path (roundtrip):  10 km (6.2 mi)

We hope you enjoy it.
