It is a mid-level hike. Moderate physical effort.

Distance: 6.5 Km - 4 Miles (round trip)

Elevation gain:  485 mts. - 1591 ft.

Time of the year:

It is an ideal trekking for snowless months (November to April) to enjoy the environment and to follow the path that leads to the summit. In winter months it is accessible but with extreme cold clothing as the weather becomes very complicated when we leave behind the vegetation zone to reach its summit. It is advisable to use snow shoes. We hope you enjoy it.

Please note :

Because sudden changes in climate occurring in the area, always due be prepared to significant temperature variations and increased wind speed. No matter if it's summer, wear waterproof jacket and boots as well as additional coat.

Mt. Susana is located 7 km (4.3 mille) west of the city of Ushuaia by Route 3  with an height of 502 m.s.n.m. (meters above sea level)  - 1647 feet above sea level.

How to get there

We must go to Tierra del Fuego National Park and about 300 m before the control of entry to the Park is on left hand Patagonia Mía restaurant. There have room to leave our vehicle. From the parking lot will begin our trek.

Starting the trekking: To begin the path we must go to the back area of the restaurant and take direction to the hill (south). After walking about 100 meters we find a very wide path (old logging road) which we must follow to reach the summit.

In general terms we continue heading south orientation considering that we will zigzagging because we are going to rise. We will find a fence that demarcates the boundaries of the National Park, it will be to our right (west) parallel to us and be with us for a short period.

We shall continue climbing up the path into the forest to the altitude of 260 meters. There arrive at the edge of Mount Susana.

Once there we must take eastbound (like returning to the city of Ushuaia) and we will continue our trek parallel to the Beagle Channel through the native forest.

After a little more than 1 km along the edge of Mount Susana we begin to notice the absence of vegetation give rise to the rocky outcrops, it is where we find the first viewpoint, as it is a balcony of rock from where we can see the Mt. Bridge, the Cañadón de la Oveja, the Mt. Segui, the Cañadón del Toro where we see the path of The End of the World Train, the Mt. Guanaco and all the surrounding mountain range.

It is a place to take time to observe enjoying the surroundings and rest.

After leaving the viewpoint follow the path that is marked with some called pircas painted or small stones on the ground. By this time the vegetation gave way to the exposed stone, so it's good time to put on warm clothes if the wind is significant.

About 600 meters further and we will be at the summit of Mount Susana where we can appreciate the Beagle Channel, Zarategui Cove, Nuisance Island and Round Island, and on the other side of the Canal will see Navarino and Hoste Island of Chile.

You can also see to the east, the city of Ushuaia, but if we walk about 100 meters from the summit to the east we have the viewpoint towards the city where you can see Ushuaia in all its immensity and the International Airport.

The place is very exposed to the winds, so unless you are very calm, it is advisable to eat lunch a little below where the shelter of the trees keep us protected.

The return of our trek we will do along the same path where we climbed to get to the parking at Patagonia Mia.

Clarification:

It is important to clarify that this is not the only path to climb  Mt. Susana, there are other variants which we will publish later. Stay tuned.

We hope you enjoy it.
